Lisa Monkus

Colorado

Thanks for taking the time to sit with us to share your thoughts with our readers. Can you start out by sharing a little bit about you?

My name is Lisa Monkus. I am the Program Coordinator at the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) in Denver. I lived in Kyiv for 4 years where I worked as an elementary school teacher at an international school. I learned a lot about the history and culture of Ukraine while I was there.

Can you tell us why you stand with Ukraine?

I returned to Colorado a few months before the war began in Ukraine and it broke my heart to see the images and hear the stories from my friends and on the news about what was happening. The only thing that has given me any peace of mind has been getting involved with fundraising events and most recently, being able to assist Ukrainian Humanitarian Parolees find their way in Denver.

Well, thank you for sharing your thoughts. In closing, is there a project, nonprofit, or an event that our readers should support?

If you or someone you know is sponsoring a Ukrainian, please contact me at USCRI 720-464-6821 or lmonkus@uscrimail.org I am working hard to help Ukrainians get their food and medical benefits and job training, find English classes and employment.
